For many, PDMS is simply another version of a 3D Model. In fact, it should be considered a database rather than just a spatial representation of objects. PDMS was created specifically for the design of new chemical installations, from the early concept to the final detailed design. PDMS provides an opportunity to schedule components, for example, the number of bolts of a particular size to complete a construction.
When it comes to as-built documentation, a PDMS model is only as useful and valuable as the information contained within the database. Consequently, the more detail collected, the greater the time and cost to produce the model. Creating an appropriate specification for the level of detail to be included is therefore critical.
